New Dishwasher

Waitressing is not my calling, but the promise of being able to bake when I get home keeps my feet moving. So strong is the pull of frosting on my bones that, almost as if by magic, my attitude is semi-positive as I close out my shift.

Marianne and I have fallen into a pleasant rhythm. When I finish my shift, I head to the library to keep her company. Or, like today, when she finishes her shift, she heads over to Winifred’s to hang out while I bake. She’s still at the library, but I have a feeling she’ll be showing up after she closes up for the evening.

I want to pretend I don’t need help to keep up with the orders from The Snuggle Inn, but after a single week of my cupcakes hitting Fisher’s menu, the demand has doubled. The people of Sweetwater Falls frequent the Bed and Breakfast for their dinners quite often.

It seems they come exclusively for dessert now, too.

A cringe of shame hits me when I recall how easily I folded in the price negotiations. I’m making a profit, but it’s not much, and definitely not enough to leave my waitressing job.

I spread out the ingredients on the counter after I get home and set down my purse. I don’t want to be up all night, so I know I have to get these cupcakes in the oven.

Winifred gets out a pitcher of lemonade and pours me a glass. “Try this, honey cake. You look flushed.”

“I am a little tired,” I admit.

“Being robbed will make anyone feel worn.”

I narrow one eye at my aunt while I drain the glass. “You made your point already.”

Winifred feigns innocence, pressing her palm to her sternum. “What point? That Gretchen played you like a fiddle? That you are Charlotte the Brave, not Charlotte Who Caves?” She grins and slaps her knee. “That rhyme just came to me.”

“Well done. I know, I know. But until something better comes along, this is a real baking job that is actually paying me money.”

“Less than you’re worth.”

Karen comes in from the back. “You’re making three dollars an hour doing this, you realize.”

My fist rests on my hip. “I didn’t realize until you told me. Thank you for that pick-me-up, Karen. I almost had energy going into this.”

Agnes follows in behind Karen. “Now, now, girls. Leave Charlotte alone. This is a life lesson she needs to learn on her own.” Agnes pinches my cheek before kissing it. “It’ll sting a little, but then you’re learn it. After you hit rock bottom, you’ll realize you are valuable, and you have to set your worth in order for the world to follow suit. If you let other people chip away at your worth, you’ll end up feeling like you’re worth nothing, which couldn’t be further from the truth.” Agnes grimaces. “Oh, sugar. I spoiled the surprise. That’s the life lesson you’re about to learn, and I just told you the moral of the story.”

I sigh at Agnes—at all three of them, really.
